Scrutiny Panel is there to make sure that elected GSU Officers do what they promised and act in the interests of Greenwich students. Panelists are randomly drawn from volunteers who are GSU Representatives (Programme Reps, Society and sports committee members, Liberation Chairs) to scrutinise the work of elected Officers five times a year

Scrutiny Panel is there to make sure that elected GSU Officers do what they promised and act in the interests of Greenwich students. Panelists are randomly drawn from volunteers who are GSU Representatives (Programme Reps, Society and sports committee members, Liberation Chairs) to scrutinise the work of elected Officers five times a year.

 

Officers are required to submit written reports and evidence of the work they have done, and the Panel has the power to approve, motivate, investigate, or submit a motion to remove based on their discussions. You can find the overall reports and results of the first full Panel of the year, which took place on 19th October 2022, here. The Chair of the Panel, Kam, reports on the Panel below: 

"The first scrutiny panel took place on 19th October 2022. All four officers have some really progressive and forward-thinking ideas which will benefit the student community greatly. The panel were particularly impressed with the Open Pantry [link], showing a practical tackle on the cost of living. There are members of the student cohort that the officers have identified as needing extra support, we look forward to seeing the progression. That being said, there were some underdeveloped ideas that the panel went through with Officers, and we gave them constructive guidance on the implementation of these ideas. We look forward to seeing how this has been taken on board at the next Scrutiny Panel" 

 

Based on the reports, the Panel made the following decisions on the reports of the four Officers. 

 

 Anuj :Motivate 

  • Some campaigns were well formed and progress had been made, especially with the vegetable garden and sports being spread across campuses

  • However, the rest, whilst appreciated as valid and ambitious ideas did not have immediately obvious plans of action

  • The Panel concluded they would like to see action plans submitted by 18th November on the following: 

  • Disabled student support

  • Tier 4 Visa and working hours

  • Investigation of recruitment practices

  • Oyster card price reduction

 

Abdul: Approve 

  • The Panel was impressed by the progress report and felt that Abdul had clearly identified barriers to progress

  • Panel will want to hear more about plans for follow-up on the Men's Mental Health Awareness Campaign at the next Panel sitting in December 

 

Krishmi: Approve 

  • The Panel felt progress had been good and objectives were clear

  • The Panel has asked that Krishmi considers expanding networking sessions in Business to other students

  • The Panel has asked whether Speak Up sessions could be rotated around days of the week where viable to allow a greater quantity of students to attend and put less pressure on an open-door policy 

  • The Panel has asked for further development of engagement and provision of academic spaces for postgraduate students at the next sitting

 

Jabed: Approve. 

  • The Panel accepts the reason for the late and incomplete submission, with a note attached to the report from GSU's Chief Executive Officer 

  • The Panel commended Jabed's work completed in that time, including updates on Black History Month, Welcome and other projects 

  • In lieu of a full report, the Panel has requested an interim report on what activities will take place before the next Panel by 18th November
