Whether it’s the opening of the new multi-faith space at Avery Hill, the Race Table Talk series, student engagement drop-ins on the Medway campus, or campaigns focused on International students – your Officers have accomplished a lot this term!

Anuj, GSU President

Safety and Security on Campuses - Collaborated closely with the University's Head of Estate and Facilities to assess vulnerable areas on our campuses, to guarantee the complete safety of students throughout all University locations.

-The University is examining the necessity of body-worn cameras for all security personnel 

-Evaluating the effectiveness of our current CCTV system 

-Exploring modern solutions and assessing the potential need for a 24/7 monitored CCTV system

-Updating the access control system

-Ensuring a visible patrolling team across all campuses

-Engaging in discussions with law enforcement to be present on campus for incident response 

Sports at Greenwich - Following numerous discussions and collaborative efforts with the University, sports facilities have been established at the Greenwich campus. These spaces provide an opportunity for students to gather with their peers, socialise, and make use of their time during breaks between classes.

International Advice Services – Drop-ins at Greenwich and Medway  
-Collaborated closely with the Senior International Student Adviser to establish a drop-in system for international students 

-Drop-ins will commence in January where students will have the opportunity to discuss their concerns with the highly trained International Student Advice team of the University 

-Details on how to book appointments will be available on the University’s website soon. Follow GSU on social media to be the first to hear about it! 

Working Hour Campaign - Anuj is campaigning to increase the number of hours International students on Student visas can work.  

The campaign is still underway, and there has been a lot of progress so far: 

-The Working Hour Campaign Petition is currently under review by the GOV.UK petition site.

-Supported by 10 additional Student Union leaders. 

-The campaign has received coverage in various press outlets. 

-A recent communication letter has been received from the office of the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. 

-Engaged in a discussion and debate at the 2023 NUS Conference. 

-The National Union of Students (NUS) has collaborated as a team to advance this initiative. 

-Recently received an invitation to participate as a panelist in the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on student and work affairs.

Aminul, GSU Officer

-Passed a motion calling for a cut to the Medway inter-campus bus fare through the  Student Assembly, with 93% of voters approving. 

-Ran multiple Medway Drop-Ins, to make sure that Medway voices are heard, and advocate for improvements to the campus. 

-Helped societies to host pre-meet ups with new members to feel comfortable getting involved and help to reduce loneliness on our campuses in the long term. 

-Working on a framework to make sure that issues raised by international students are responded to.

-Worked on the new Avery Hill multi-faith space, a campaign started by 2022/23 GSU officer Abdul Ahad. Avery Hill multi-faith space is now open for use for students and staff members

-Worked closely with Freelance Hub, a freelancing platform that helps students take on a variety of projects and improve student employability. 

-Hosted a coffee and catch-up for disabled students in collaboration with the wellbeing team during Disability History Month, to foster diversity and inclusivity. 

-Worked closely with the Sustainability team to introduce sustainability training and recognition for clubs and societies at GSU. 

-Raised awareness about Islamophobia during Islamophobia awareness month via an exhibition in Dreadnought.

Race Table Talk
-Launched the Race Table Talk series to create more awareness of the awarding gap and amplify the voices of BAME students 

-In collaboration with Dr. Kenisha Linton, organised two impactful sessions of the Race Table Talk series 

-The turnout surpassed expectations, which highlights the pressing need for such conversations within the University community 

Faculty of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (FEHHS) drop-in sessions
-In order to bolster student engagement between GSU and FEHHS, Sodiq organised drop-in sessions

-Drop-in sessions encouraged active student participation and served as a platform for students to voice their needs and concerns 

Research Corner Project
-Spearheaded the initiative to create centralized Research Corners across the Uuniversity's campuses, specifically aimed at postgraduate research students. The vision was to provide dedicated spaces that foster academic research and collaboration. 

-The groundwork has been laid, with plans in motion to launch the first Research Corner at the Greenwich campus in the upcoming term. 

-Simultaneously, a proposal has been crafted and will be submitted to the Drill Hall Library committee by January. This proposal outlines the intended changes and the vision for the Medway campus's Research Corner.
