Bar Events

Our two venues; Bar Latitude (Greenwich Campus) and Sparrows Bar (Avery Hill), serve two distinct functions: Bar Latitude is a cool, chill out bar that you can visit for lunch or dinner and between lectures, while Sparrows Bar is our nightclub venue, while also offering food and drink throughout the day.

Our bars play host to dozens events over the academic year: with both venues being available to hire to Student Groups, they are ideal locations for fundraising or awareness events.

Every year, our bars host

52

student-led events (that's more than one a week!). These range from Student Group fundraisers to Event Management student coursework.

By allowing free use of the venues and equipment, more money is raise for their cause, stakeholder relations and event management skills are developed, and the SU engages more students.

We've sold

9,243

pounds worth of tickets to our events this year (though most are free of charge).

The Students’ Union (SU) runs outlets on the Avery Hill (The Village Shop and Sparrows) and Greenwich (Bar Latitude).

The bars serve freshly prepared cooked food in a relaxing atmosphere where students can chill out with free Wi-Fi and enjoy a diverse entertainments programme.

As recognised by our Best Bar None Gold Award (retained in 2014-15), the SU continues to offer safe spaces to socialise to nationally accredited standards, which includes educating students on safer drinking. All the events we put on in the bars are inclusive, and promoted to a wide audience.

As well as the social scene, our bars offer employment to our students. The bars and shops are easily our biggest student staff employer and offer flexible working hours to fit student lifestyles. Unlike most other work environments, we put the degrees of our students first and try to cater wherever possible. We support our staff through training, which can offer them transferable skills for their future career

This year, our venues retained the Best Bar None Gold award, a national accreditation for excellence in bars. The award criteria includes; active campaigning against binge drinking, responsible leadership, and promotion of your venue as a safe, vibrant place to go for an evening. It is acknowledged by the Home Office as having a positive effect on the night time economy, and we've got a Gold Award to show for it!

Freshers Fortnight is the first impression that new students have of the Students' Union. We put on a wide range of events and activities, from nights out to non-alcoholic evenings. With over 100 events taking place, Freshers 2014 really was our biggest Freshers yet.

Our fundraising at the Freshers' Fair, through selling stalls to external companies, we raised

13000

pounds to go back into Student Union services

Across both our Avery Hill and Greenwich campuses, over

5500

students attended and collected their free 'I love Greenwich' bags!

For both Freshers student staff and volunteers, we provided training and support for a range of different responsibilites. We hired volunteers in the following areas:

  • Wayfinders
  • Activity Leader
  • Team Leader
  • Driver
  • Freshers Fair Helper

All of these volunteers were able to log their hours and skills gained with the Students' Union volunteering and employability toolkit. This toolkit allows these volunteers to work towards recognition and awards to celebrate your achievements!

For Medway campus, GK Unions provides activities and events, including their own Freshers fair, coordinated with us so there is no clash and all students are able to access a Freshers fair.
