Hey there! My name is Sharifa Yakubu, and I am running for GSU Officer. I am running because I have realised that numerous university issues affect us daily, and this pandemic has further highlighted them. We need to enhance the services provided, and I will ensure that this happens!
If elected, I will campaign on the following things:
The NUS (2020) stipulate that over half of students' mental health has worsened since the pandemic. Therefore, we need much better support. I will therefore work closely with the Student Wellbeing Service team to provide more students' services.
- Assignment and Academic Skills
Many students require extra academic guidance and support with essays and assignments. I plan to work closely with the University academic support networks to introduce additional academic skills workshops within their modules.
- Communication with lecturers
The pandemic demonstrated that we need further communication with lecturers, now more than ever. I will collaborate with academics and develop strategies to enhance communication between them and students.
A student once said that it is not about having ramps or lifts as much anymore as it is about creating awareness and celebrating disability other than during disability month. I will work with students that are most affected to raise awareness, celebrate and provide more support where needed.
The pandemic has changed all of our lives. This has meant that some students may struggle financially in the coming year. I will tackle this issue by advocating for the extension of online learning with a reduction in fees for those of you that need it the most.
Please vote for me between March 1st and March 4th.
