Fundraising (for your group or for charity)

Lots of groups fundraise to support charities and causes big and small, or to raise an income to support student group activity.

There are hundreds of charities in the UK to support, big and small. You can choose to support a big charity which has widespread recognition such as Cancer Research, Action Against Hunger or Water Aid. You can also choose to support something closer to your heart by choosing a smaller/local charity which means a lot to you, or someone you care about.

You can also fundraise for your student group to generate income to continue to deliver your activities in the future. This is because we are a charity!

Fundraising for an external charity must be for a registered charity and reported to GSU for approval before fundraising takes place.

Fundraising for an External charity

Once you have decided what external charity you want to raise funds for, it is important you reach out to that charity to get support for fundraising. For support in planning fundraising events, please see the organising events section.

Where possible we highly advise that you use an online fundraising platform such as JustGiving to manage donations, these funds will then directly go to the charity without having to go through any Union accounts. This will also help you track how much has been raised so this can be easily reported at the end of the fundraising period.

Fundraising for your group

This can happen in a number of ways but the easiest is to sell products and tickets on the GSU website which will go directly to your account.

Remember: GSU is a cashless organisation so cannot accept cash payments!
